He is neither a moron nor a stable genius, but the jury is still out on being an agent or asset. The Mueller Report established that Russia interfered in the 2016 election in order to benefit Trump's election chances and diminish Clinton's. The Report did not establish that the Trump Campaign conspired with or coordinated with Russia. But, it did not exonerate Trump either. All told, the investigations resulted in charges against 8 Trump officials, aids, and associates; 12 Russian intelligence officers, and a number of others. Still, it seems unlikely that he is a Russian agent. But, it is clearly disconcerting that he seems to trust Russia over U.S. intelligence agencies and that many of his actions diminish the ideals that have been the hallmark of our national reputation.
Presidents win by assembling coalitions of voters. Trump's winning 3-point strategy has been to: (1) Choose special interest groups with overriding single issues that do not conflict with other groups; (2) Focus on appearing to deliver on their one or two highest priorities, even if their desires are socially unacceptable; and (3) Provide a socially acceptable excuse for them to vote against your opponent. In 2016, this worked because of Clinton's emails. How many times did we hear, "But her emails - I can't vote for her." So, Trump gets elected. The Greed group gets tax cuts, deregulation, and corruption; the Pro-white group gets a wall and immigration control; Radical evangelicals get a reactionary court, anti-abortion rhetoric, and feel-good Executive decisions; and Anti-government groups get a crippled, ineffective government. America gets chaos, increased debt, and a horrific response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Trump is not stupid. He is just uninformed, ignorant, and uninterested in many aspects of governing. For example, it is not wrong to ask the CDC to look into using bleach or UV light for treating COVID patients. But, it is a suggestion that one would expect from a 6th Grade class, not a sitting U.S. President three months into a global pandemic. This reflects his ignorance of the issue and his unpreparedness to lead us through COVID. His inability to tell the truth when it makes him look bad, his deliberate deception of the public about COVID-19 dangers, a lack of trust in experts, and a focus on avoiding blame rather than solving problems means we have an incompetent and dangerous President. We will see if his personal encounter with COVID-19 changes the way he responds to the pandemic. The answer: Nope. Nada. Nyet.
